A qualification that proves you can do your job safely and correctly. There is no exam and no classroom — you build a portfolio at work and an assessor decides whether you are competent. On the RQF it sits at the same level as GCSE grades 9 to 4, the old A* to C.
One thing worth knowing early: it does not replace GCSE English and maths if an employer specifically asks for those. And if you are on a Level 2 apprenticeship, functional skills sit alongside the portfolio as a separate thing.
Almost every returned Level 2 unit says the same thing: too general. The left column is what learners write when they try to sound proper. The right column is the same person, same shift, with the detail left in — and that is the whole difference.

Evidence is not an essay. It is anything that shows your assessor you can do the job — and four of these six barely involve writing at all. This is the thing Level 2 learners most often get stuck on, and it is rarely explained properly at enrolment.

S.B. works nights at a distribution centre and had been registered on Level 2 for seven months with almost nothing in his portfolio. He is good at the job — his team leader said so on the phone without being asked. The problem was that he left school at sixteen and had not written more than a text message since. Every time he sat down to do an account he wrote three sentences that said he follows the correct procedures, read them back, decided they sounded wrong, and closed the laptop.
Two phone calls, fifteen minutes each, on his day off. A writer who has run a warehouse floor asked him about specific shifts rather than about his job in general. The scan that came up red and the two SKUs he found in the same bay. The pallet he refused on goods in because the shrink wrap was torn and three cases were crushed. The near miss he reported when somebody left a cage in the aisle, and what he wrote on the form. He described all of it easily and in detail — he had simply never believed any of it was worth writing down. Six accounts came out of those two calls, all in his own words, none longer than four hundred words.
All six accepted at the next visit, the observation booked around a goods-in shift, and the qualification claimed five weeks after that first call.
He could describe every part of his job perfectly. Nobody had told him that was all the qualification wanted.

Roughly, yes. RQF Level 2 sits at the same level as GCSE grades 9 to 4 — what used to be A* to C. It is not the same kind of qualification, because an NVQ is judged on whether you can do the job rather than on an exam, but for job adverts and college entry the level is treated as comparable.

Yes, for everyday purposes. Everyone still says NVQ, but qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, which replaced the QCF in 2015. Your certificate will probably say “Level 2 Diploma in …” rather than NVQ, and the portfolio behind it works exactly as it always has.
