She registered on Level 3 to move onto the Educator qualification and stalled almost immediately, for a reason nobody at her centre had anticipated: there was no colleague to witness anything she did. Her tutor kept asking for witness testimony and observation records. She had neither, and no realistic way of getting them — her setting is her living room, and the only other adult in the building most days is the postman.

The most expensive mistake in early years is finishing a qualification that does not do what you needed it to do. In England the Department for Education publishes which qualifications are recognised at each level for staffing ratios, and settings check it before they hire. Awarding organisations do not always make this obvious at enrolment.

Level 2 evidences safe, warm, correct practice carried out with guidance. Level 3 — the Early Years Educator qualification — evidences independent judgement about children's learning and welfare, and it is the level most settings recruit on and count in ratio. The step up is not more words; it is showing the reasoning behind what you chose to do.
There are English and maths requirements attached to the Early Years Educator qualification, and they have changed more than once in recent years — including what counts as an acceptable alternative to GCSE. Check the current position with your centre before you enrol, because this is one of the commonest reasons learners stall halfway through.
NCFE CACHE, Pearson, City & Guilds, TQUK and Highfield are the ones we see most, plus centre-devised workbooks where the awarding organisation stays in the background. Send the unit titles over and the criteria wording usually tells us what we need the same day.
In practice, yes. The letters NVQ are still used in every nursery staffroom, but early years qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland now sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, which took over from the QCF in 2015. Your certificate will read something like “Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce” rather than NVQ.
